After attending second training workshop organised by the National Basketball Association (NBA) at Orlando, Florida (US), from November 3 to November 9, Paramdeep Singh (34) is back in India and is determined to bring back the glory to the sport. Paramdeep is the only coach from India who has been selected for the coaching workshop organised by NBA. He had attended second workshop; the earlier one in Texas, US, in 2011.
"My selection came as a surprise to me and it was an honour also as no Indian coach has ever been selected for this training workshop. Observers from the NBA were present at the Mumbai workshop, which was organised by the Indian chapter of NBA in 2011, when they spotted me and selected me for the prestigious workshop in US," said Paramdeep Singh.
After playing for Punjab and his employer BSF for 12 years, Paramdeep opted for coaching and passed one-year diploma in basketball coaching from National Institute of Sports, Patiala, in 2009-10.
"Basketball was always been a passion for me and while playing for Punjab, we have won gold in 1996-97. In 2004 and 2006 editions of the national tournament, our team won silver and bronze. For my employer, the Border Security Force (BSF), too, I had an excellent record," he added.
"After joining basketball coaching, I got the opportunity to work under chief coach of the Indian team, US-based Scott Flemming and I learned a lot from his style of working. Under his coaching, Indian basketball team had shown significant improvement and got five steps up by improving its position to 11th from 16th in Asia," he added.
Paramdeep is currently associated as an assistant coach with under-16, under-14 and U-18 teams of the country. With the senior team, in first FIBA 3 on 3 championship held at Doha, he travelled as a coach but the team could not go past the quarter finals. However, India's women team, with which he was also attached, managed to win the title in the tournament.
"I joined the BSF in 1991 as an assistant sub-inspector. I have got full support of my seniors and their encouragement has helped me touch new heights," he added.
Paramdeep, who is working as an inspector with BSF, shared with HT his dream for encouraging young talent to opt for this game. "We aim to spot young talent and train them for future by using techniques and methodologies being used in US and European countries. We are also getting renowned industrial houses as sponsors. With stuff available with us, we can hope that the future of the sport is bright," he said.
