The US has withdrawn part of its special forces presence in Pakistan after a request from Pakistan military head General Ashfaq Kayani to the Pentagon.
A Pentagon spokesman said: "The US had been notified in writing that the government of Pakistan wished for the US to reduce its footprint in Pakistan".
More than 200 US troops are involved in training the local Pakistani forces in counter-terrorism techniques to protect the border with Afghanistan.
The relation between the two allies is continuing to deteriorate following the US raid to kill Osama bin Laden.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is on a visit to Pakistan, which could be the beginning of a push to patch up relations, reports The Telegraph.
