The parties have formed a ''Krishi Jomi Raksha Committee'' (Save Agricultural Land Committee) to oppose the acquisition of 300 bighas for the proposed camp, CPI(M) district secretariat member Goutam Goswami said today.

"If the land was to be acquired for industry then we would have considered it. But since the district has no industry and people have to rely mostly on agriculture, not an inch of land will be given up for the BSF camp. Moreover, the land at Mahabari in Bansihari block is a multiple crop yielding one," he said.

Expressing support, Trinamool Congress district president Biplab Mitra said the authorities should have learnt lessons from the Singur and Nandigram movements. "If the authorities have not done so, they will never learn."
Letters have been sent to Governor M K Naryanan, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Land and Land Revenue Minister Rezzak Mollah and Leader of the Opposition Partha Chatterjee after a mass signature campaign, CPI(M) Zilla Parishad member Akhil Burman said.

Besides, a representation against the acquisition of land was submitted by the Committee to District Magistrate Ashok Bandopadhyay, he said.

The DM, when contacted, confirmed the same.

Zilla Parishad sabhadipati M Murmu said farmers could not be allowed to sustain any loss due to acquisition of land for the proposed BSF camp.

While the BSF authorities were not available for comment, local farmers said they had seen security personnel measuring land.

"We will resist if the district authorities do not take steps and not allow the BSF personnel to enter our land again," they said.
