BSF chief meets jawans

Bhubaneswar, Jan. 23: Director general (DG) of the Border Security Force (BSF), Raman Srivastava, today met the BSF jawans deployed at Kalimela in the Maoist-dominated Malkangiri district and took stock of the prevailing situation there.
Srivastava, who arrived here today on a two-day visit, also interacted with the local police officers. Tomorrow he would meet chief minister Naveen Patnaik and other senior officials of the government in the capital.
The visit is being described as important in view of allegations that the state police was not getting adequate support from the BSF in its anti-Maoist operations in the southern districts. Malkangiri district, has been problematic in particular where the relationship between the BSF and the state police has worsened.
In another development, the state police last night arrested one of the prominent leaders of the Chassi Mulia Sangha, a Maoist-backed outfit which has been spearheading a campaign against non-tribal landlords in the Narayanpatna area of Koraput district adjoining Malkangiri. Sources said Ramu Padhi, a close associate of the sangha chief, Nachika Linga, was nabbed during a combing operation.
Padhi was also in the list of the “most wanted” persons of the Andhra Pradesh police. Last year, police had also pasted his photos on the walls in the Narayanpatna area. Police were looking for him for his alleged involvement in at least ten cases, including a case of murder.
