AMRITSAR: Postponement of the high-level meeting between director general of Border Security Force (BSF) and Pakistan Rangers has not only reduced the possibility of holding sports events between the jawans of the two border guarding forces and establishment of sector commandant level hot line between two nations, but had also delayed the discussions on the contentious border issues with Pakistan.

The meeting which was scheduled to be held in March end has now been postponed and in all likelihood will be held this month, BSF Inspector General, Frontier, Himmat Singh said on Friday.

Both border guarding forces had in last October decided to hold sports competitions for jawans of two nations to bring cordiality. It was also decided to establish sector commandant level telephonic contact between two nations for better communication to immediately sort out local border issues, including inadvertent crossing, crossing of animals and curb smuggling activities.

While not being able to give the exact reason of postponement of meeting, Himmat Singh said, 'Meeting will be held this month.' He said modalities had not been worked out for beginning of sports matches and setting up of telephonic contact at sector commandant level.

BSF sources said the meeting was delayed due to recently concluded secretary level talk betweenIndia and Pakistan. 'Normally, the dates are mutually decided but in wake of meeting new dates could be announced after both sides work out the outcome of secretary level discussions,' said sources.

Sources said Pakistan was not eager to begin sports competitions that is why they did not respond. 'They are more concerned about their own security issues, especially after terror attack on police training academy in 2009 which is close to Wagah and playing matches will be their least priority,' sources said adding that if both sides implements the decision it would be a beginning of new era of relations between two border guarding forces.
