In view of rise in infiltration from across the border, Inspector General of Police (IGP) BSF Jammu Frontier, S Chatopadhay today said the coming winter season would be more 'challenging' for the security forces.
''Infiltration attempts show immense rise during the onset of winter season but the troops have been put on high alert along the international border,'' the IGP told reporters while addressing his maiden news conference at Frontier Headquarters, Paloura.
He, however, said as compared to 2009 wherein 26 infiltration attempts took place on IB, this year till July, 36 incidents of infiltration have been reported, which have been successfully foiled.
''Militants might try to sneak into Indian territory with the approaching of winters but we are prepared to meet any challenge as our forces guarding the stretch of international border, will take all possible measures to curb the infiltrations,'' Mr Chatopadhay added.
He said the Ballard and Basantar areas along the Indo-Pak border in Samba district witnessed maximum incidents of infiltration attempts this year, which were 'supported' by the Pakistan Rangers.
''To develop cordial relations between both the countries, sweets are being exchanged on every August 14 and 15 as a mark of Independence day celebrations of both the countries,'' he said adding that BSF also lodged protest with the Pakistan Rangers at the time of incidents of infiltration attempts.
The IGP also informed that Director General BSF Raman Srivastav would soon lead a delegation to Lahore and all matters related to border security and infiltrations would thoroughly be discussed.
''As per militants figure is concerned, we have inputs of 400-500 militants waiting on the other side of the border to sneak intoIndian Territory,'' he said, adding despite being the lone force deployed along international border, BSF is courageously ready to face any challenge.
