Raipur/Munger: Three BSF jawans and two members of Chhattisgarh police were killed in an early morning Maoist ambush in Kanker while in Munger,Bihar, four cops were killed in a fierce encounter with the Leftist rebels at a hilltop near Punadih village in Lakhisarai district on Sunday.
As the BSF suffered its first losses in anti-Maoist operations in Bastar region, director general Raman Srivastava flew down to Raipur. If we fight, there will be some casualties. Its impossible to avoid losses in any conflict. But well inflict more casualties than we suffer, he said.
A combined force of 59 BSF jawans of the 200 Battalion, four policemen, and five SPOs left their camp at 4am,officially for area domination. They came under fire three hours later,8km from post, near Bhuski village,on the road to Pakhanjor in Kanker.
A police source said the jawans were clearing the road for the visit of a minister of the Chhattisgarh government. The minister of forests Vikram Usendi was to visit Pakhanjor this morning, and so a road opening party was sent out to demine the area. The Maoists perhaps knew about this and planned an ambush accordingly, said the source.
