A two-month long night curfew was clamped along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam s Cachar district last night in view of the spurt in infiltration and smuggling.
The porous land and riverine border that the district shares with Bangladesh has been witnessing unabated influx of militants and miscreants. Intelligence agencies have reported that the militants and infiltrators often use boats to sneak in during night since it is difficult for the BSF watchposts to keep vigil on the rivers. The prohibitory orders, imposed under Section 144 CrPC, has barred people from moving along this border within its one-km radius during night for two months between 0800 hrs and 1700 hrs.
Cachar Magistrate H K Dev Mahanta also barred fishing on the Surma river, in Kathigorah block of the district during the same period. Official sources today said the order was promulgated on the basis of the intelligence inputs which had warned of the possibility of some militant outfits sneaking in.
''The prohibitory order will also bar movement of rickshaw, hand cart and other vehicles carrying rice, sugar, kerosene oil and other commodities within a radius of five-km area from the international border during the curfew period. However, the state and the Central government employees enaged in duty in the said areas will remain outside the purview of the prohibirtory orders.
It may be mentioned that night curfew was already in force along 92-km long Indo-Bangladesh border in Karimganj district of Barak Valley.
