The Indian Army is to induct unmanned ground vehicles, an official from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has said.
Chief controller research and development, armament and combat engineering S Sundaresh said the army would deploy 20 remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) developed by the DRDO's R&D establishment in Pune, Maharashtra, India.
Daksh, the ROV, is designed to operate remotely from a distance of 500m and is capable of locating, handling and destroying hazardous objects, such as improvised explosive devices, safely.
Another version through its radiation measurement and automatic control unit and portable gas chromatograph was ready and the army had to come up with its requirement, he added.
The road map for induction of the vehicles, being developed by DRDO, would be ready in the next few months.
DRDO is also developing another version of the vehicle to monitor the contamination level in a nuclear, biological or chemical-affected environment, which would also be inducted into the army, according to theHindu.
