LeT, others whip up public opinion against proposed wall on Jammu border

NEW DELHI: The construction of a 10-metre high embankment on the India-Pakistan border in Jammu sector by India is causing considerable hostility in Pakistan. Security agencies here say that though Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif has extended a hand of friendship, a propaganda to form public opinion against the wall is being spread with participation from members of his own party.
The Border Security Force (BSF) recently revived a five-year-old plan to build a 179-km-long, 10-metre high mud embankment on the Jammu border to prevent border villages and its own jawans being hit by Pakistan Ranger bullets and mortar shells during ceasefire violations.

Through various public foras and protest rallies in Pakistan, however, the message being spread is that India is doing what Israel did to Palestine, dividing Kashmir even as the dispute remain unsettled. The information being spread also talks about a concrete wall on the LoC, which is nowhere in the plans of the armed forces.

Haryana cops lead in All India Police Games

RANCHI: On the third day of the ongoing 62nd All India Police Games, Haryana police maintained its dominance while Punjab police managed to secure the second position in the medals tally. On Wednesday, wrestling, weight lifting and judo tournaments were organized.

In the 96 kg men's wrestling category, Parminder Kumar from Punjab won gold, beating Vedpal from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Rishi Pal from the Border Security Force (BSF) had to be satisfied with the bronze medal. In the 74 kg men's wrestling category, Vinay Kumar from Haryana defeated Rajeev Kumar from the CRPF, while the bronze medal was bagged by Rakesh from Punjab. Naveen Mor from Haryana snatched gold from Vijay Pal of the CRPF in the 120 kg freestyle category and Pardeep Kumar from CRPF managed to finish third. Gurmail Singh from the BSF received gold medal by beating Jai Bhagwan of the CRPF. In the same category, Vivek Rana from Uttar Pradesh secured third position by beating Hardeep Kumar from Punjab.

The attrition in central paramilitary forces continues, with 9,000 personnel quitting this year till October.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), in a written reply, told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that more than 47,000 personnel at various levels in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Border Security Force (BSF), Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Shashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Assam Rifles (AR) took either voluntary retirement or resigned between 2010 and 2013.

Coast Guard nabs eight Pakistanis and seizes two fishing boats

KUTCH (GUJ): The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) arrested eight Pakistani nationals and seized their two fishing boats, for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) illegally at the mouth of Kori creek here, ICG officials said here today.

The operation was carried out today afternoon by hovercraft launched from the Jakhau Coast Guard Station, official sources said.

The Border Security Force (BSF) and ICG have also launched search operations to trace five other suspected Pakistani nationals, who managed to flee.

Nothing incriminating has been recovered from them and prima facie, they seem to be fishermen, officials said.

They will be brought to Koteshwar, subjected to medical tests and then be taken to the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC).

BSF seizes 12 kg explosives in Bengal, one held

The BSF Monday arrested a man in West Bengal's Malda district for trying to smuggle 12 kg of explosives toBangladesh, an official statement said.

Kaliachak resident Zaizul Haque was held at Churiantpur border outpost and the explosives seized from him, said the Border Security Force (BSF) statement.

Earlier Saturday, BSF troopers seized 20 kg of explosives from Nimtita BOP in Murshidabad district.

Maoists free villagers in Odisha

Malkangiri (Odisha): Four days after abducting them, Maoists freed two villagers, including a woman and son of a sarpanch, in Malkangiri district of Odisha. 

Padia Madhi, son of Gumphakonda village panchayat sarpanch, and Rame Padiami reached their village yesterday after trekking a few km, Inspector in-charge of Kalimela police station SK Nayak said. 

A group of red rebels had struck in Gumphakonda and abducted three persons on Wednesday night suspecting them to be police informers, police said. 

One of the abducted persons had managed to escape from the clutches of the Maoists the next day when the group of ultras were engaged in an exchange of fire with BSF. 

The rest two were set free by the Maosits with a warning that they should have no link with the police, sources said.

Bengal, a transit route for wildlife trafficking

KOLKATA: In the last three months, BSF, Kolkata Police and the Customs have arrested more than 45 people and seized a huge number of turtles, tokay geckos - an elusive lizard - and several forest birds from different places of Bengal, particularly from the bordering areas.
The arrests and seizure once again establish the fact that Bengal is one of the key transit hubs of wildlife smuggling.
"On November 21, the BSF officials seized 10 tokay geckos -which has high demand in the international markets - from Haridaspur on Bangaon border and arrested two persons - Md Roken and Md Soriful. These reptiles are sold for approximately Rs 20 lakh each in the international market," said inspector general of BSF's south Bengal frontier, R K Mishra. The 40th battalion of BSF also seized several star tortoises worth more than Rs 4 crore four crore
from the border area a month back. Last week, Bidhanagar police arrested three persons and seized 70 sacks of turtles and star tortoises from a truck coming from Uttar Pradesh.

The Border Security Force (BSF) has put up anti-sniping measures for the safety of its troops guarding the Indo-Pak border in Jammu frontier.

"We have installed anti-sniping measures for safety and security of our jawans guarding the borderline with Pakistanin Jammu frontier," DIG, BSF Virender Singh told PTI here.

Anti-sniping measures are undertaken to prevent BSF troops to become targets of any firing by snipers across the border.

BSF arrests suspected ISI agent from Bangladesh border

VISAKHAPATNAM: Following the central government's decision to bifurcate the state, over 2,400 security personnel were deployed at various places in the city and district to quell any violent instances that may rear their ugly head as a result of public anger and protests.

Paramilitary forces like Central Reserve Protection Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF) and Andhra Pradesh Special Police (APSP), that have been camping since the agitation first broke out in August, along with local armed reserved forces and police personnel were deployed in various sensitive areas of the city on Friday.

BSF Rajasthan frontier bags best frontier award for 9th consecutive year

JAISALMER: The Rajasthan frontier of BSF deployed at the 1045km-long Indo-Pak border has been awarded with the best frontier award among 13 frontiers in the country consecutively the ninth time. The award was bestowed upon the state frontier by Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar in a grand parade on BSF's 48th foundation day at the Chhawla campus in New Delhi on Sunday. IG P C Meena (IPS) received the Ashwini Kumar trophy for the award (director general trophy for training and sports).

In this competition, 31 training and sports competitions (9 for training and 22 under the sports category) are organized between all frontiers of the BSF. In the training events, commando, band competition, anti sabotage, photography, videography, motor transport, bigule and sports events including swimming, water polo, high board diving, spring board diving, 12 km cross country race, 16km FPIT and judo are organized.


Under the able guidance of IG P C Meena, Rajasthan frontier performed excellent in every field and stood first in swimming, high board diving, spring board diving, wrestling Greco style, boxing, weight lifting, football, lawn tennis, judo, volleyball, photography and motor transport.

This time, the Rajasthan frontier being the winner scored 174 marks and the Gujarat frontier is on the second position with 159 marks.
