HASSAN: "Is it enough to pay tribute during the guard of honour for a BSF jawan who sacrificed his life for the country for the past 11 years?" asked Shivkumar, the older brother of BSF jawan Lokesh K P.

Lokesh (30), son of a farmer, Putegowda of Karigowdanakopalu village in Hassan taluk, died under mysterious circumstances on August 28, on the Jammu border near Khura. According to a BSF commandant, three bullets were found in Lokesh's body.

Sharing their with `The Times of India' on Monday, Lokesh's family members said: "It's been more than one-and-half months since Lokesh's death. Even after calling the senior BSF officials innumerable times, they are not explaining how Lokesh died. Neither the BSF nor the Centre has paid us any compensation, apart from former district in-charge minister B N Bachegowda, who offered Rs 2 lakh as compensation," they said.

Shivkumar said: "So far, the BSF officials have not surrendered any of Lokesh's belongings to us. Every time I make a phone call to the BSF officials, they simply say, `enquiry is going on.' And the strangest thing is that my brother's mobile phone number is still being used by someone. They do not answer the call or the cellphone is switched off," added Shivkumar, who dialled his brother's phone number many times, after his death. "Soon we will submit a memorandum to the district administration to find out how Lokesh died and who is using his cellphone," he added.

A village senior of Karigowdanakopalu said: "There are some 50 families in our village, from where four soldiers have been serving our country in BSF and the India Army. But the response from BSF officials over the death of Lokesh has been discouraging aspiring youths to join the Army."
