date Sun, Mar 20, 2011KOKRAJHAR: The anti-talks faction of NDFB on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the ambush on the BSF convoy near Ultapani about 50 km from Kokrajhar near the Indo-Bhutan border on Monday evening at around 7 pm on Monday. Eight BSF troopers were killed and ten injured in the bloodiest attack on security forces in Assam this year.
G Bidai, the self-styled central commanding officer of anti-talks NDFB, in a telephonic conversation with media on Tuesday afternoon claimed responsibility for the ambush on the BSF jawans. Bidai said security forces should stop atrocities and killings of the outfit's members in the name of fake encounters.
Bidai also warned the group would carry out even more such ferocious attacks if security forces did not stop operations against its members. He said many NDFB cadres have been apprehended by security forces although the outfit has shown its willingness to sit for peace talks and declaration of unilateral ceasefire. He said the apprehended cadres could be brought to book as per law but mysterious disappearances and fake encounter killings would not be tolerated.
It may be mentioned that eight BSF Jawans were killed (three on the spot and five later) and 10 others injured when their bus was ambushed by the anti-talks faction of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB). The bus was carrying 20 BSF jawans and was on its way to the force's base camp at Ultapani.
Three BSF Jawans were killed on the spot while five later succumbed to their injuries at Lower Assam Private Hospital in Bongaigan and Bongaigan Civil Hospital. Those who died on the spot were identified as Naresh Kumar of Rajasthan; Kuber Gora of Karnataka; Hira Singh of Punjab. Those who succumbed to their injuries in the hospital were Prabin Dere of Maharastra; Palaram Lamba of Haryana; S K Sarma of MP; Santa Ram of Chattisgarh and Bijay Kumar of Punjab.
Six of the ten others injured, three of them critically, are now being treated at Lower Assam Private Hospital with multiple bullet injuries. Two others injured Havildar Rajpal Singh and driver P Suresh have been referred to Gauhati Medical College Hospital as their condition is critical. The last two are being treated at Bongaigan Civil Hospital.
Kokrajhar SP P K Dutta said the anti-talks NDFB faction led by G Bidai along with two other section commanders, B Somai and B Sudrai, are behind the attack on BSF Jawans. Bidai has already claimed responsibility for the ambush as the NDFB is active in the area, Dutta said. He further said intense operations would continue for the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, BSF DG Raman Srivastav along with the SSB DG who had come along with additional DGP of Assam Police visited Bongaigan Lower Assam Civil Hospital and took stock of the situation of the injured personnel.
