3 killed, 6 hurt in BSF firing on C'nawabganj border in a month

Indian Border Security Force (BSF) killed three Bangladeshis and seriously injured six others after they were caught while trying to cross different border points in Chapainawabganj district during last one month.

Indian border guards gunned down Bangladeshi cattle traders Fatik, 30, son of Tarajol Mia of Parchouka village, and Ismail Hossain, 25, son of Mokhlesur Rahman of Pialmari village, under Monakasha union at Shingnagar border of Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj on August 16, said sources at Bangladesh Rifles (BDR).

BSF personnel of Doulatpur camp of Malda district in West Bengal opened fire on a group of eight to ten cattle traders, who were trying to cross the barbed wire at Shingnagar at around 10:30pm, killing the two on the spot.

Another cattle trader Azizul Islam, 32, of Raninagar village was also bullet-hit during the incident.

The other traders somehow managed to escape the hail of bullets. After the shooting, BSF personnel dragged the dead bodies into their territory and returned them after a day.

BSF of Padmarchar camp in Malda killed another cattle trader Saidur Rahman after they caught him trying to cross Monohorpur border of Shibganj upazila on September 5. BSF members cut off the tendons of his hands and legs and threw him into the Padma River. He later died at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Indian border guards of Padmarchar camp caught cattle traders Shahidul Islam, 30, Jamal Uddin, 23, Dalim, 28, and Selim Reza, 27, when they were returning from India with cattle on a boat early morning of September 12.

They tortured and stabbed the Bangladeshi nationals with sharp weapons and threw them into the Padma. Locals rescued them from the river and rushed them to Sadar hospital.

On August 31, BSF troops of Nimtita camp caught Nurul Haque, 30, of Sahapara of Shibganj upazila, tortured him and threw into the Padma. Locals rescued him from the river.

"The Indian border guards brutally torture Bangladeshi cattle traders to create panic among others," said Lt Col Zayed Hossain, commanding officer of 39 Rifles Battalion in Chapainawabganj.

"Commanders of BDR and BSF discussed different issues including killing of Bangladeshis by BSF and other cross border crimes at a daylong meeting at Poladanga border on July 26. BSF agreed not to kill Bangladeshis and resolve major disputes through discussion but incidents of killing and torture have continued," Lt Col Zayed said.

He also said that a DG level meeting between BDR and BSF is to be held in the capital on September 23 where these issues will be discussed again.

Locals of Padmar Char area said BSF brutally tortures and kills cattle traders but does not take action against illegal drug dealers.
