Shillong, Oct 1 (IANS) A hardcore rebel member of the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) in Meghalaya has surrendered, a Border Security Force (BSF) official said Friday.
'Corporal' Richarbor Lyngdoh, alias Juban, had undergone arms and explosive training for six months at HNLC's Khagrachari camp in Bangladesh.
'He surrendered due to financial hardship that the outfit is facing in Bangladesh,' BSF spokesman Ravi Gandhi said.
Lyngdoh is accused of involvement in various criminal cases including extortion, kidnapping and other illegal activities.
The HNLC, which runs hit-and-run operations from its hideout in Bangladesh, has been demanding a sovereign Khasi homeland in eastern Meghalaya.
The outfit is closely linked to the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) as well as to the Isak-Muivah faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland and the National Liberation Front of Tripura.
The BSF have handed over the rebel to police.
