BERHAMPUR: A ‘most wanted' activist of controversial Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh (CMAS) Rampadi Puala was arrested in Koraput district on Sunday.
‘Prize catch'
He was wanted by Andhra Pradesh as well as Orissa police. Last year Andhra police had pasted posters in Narayanpatna block of Koraput district terming him most wanted ‘criminal' along with the top brass of CMAS Nachika Linga and former second in command of CMAS Nachika Singanna. Puala was nabbed during a joint operation by Border Security Force (BSF) and district police personnel.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Laxmipur in Koraput district Y.Jagannath Rao termed the arrest of Puala a prize catch. He alleged that Puala was also part of Maoist organisation. It may be noted that it was alleged that CMAS had links with the Maoists. Mr Linga was now absconding and Singanna was killed in police firing near Narayanpatna police station in December 2009. So, police anticipated extracting information regarding activities of Maoists and CMAS in Koraput district. He is now being interrogated at Laxmipur.
Mr Rao added that arrested Puala was in injured condition. He was injured in a bike accident. He is being provided medical care at Laxmipur.
As per police records in Orissa, Puala had at least 11 warrants pending against him. Out of them six are in Laxmipur police station and four are pending in Narayanpur police station. They include some murder cases.
This arrest came at a time when the Director General (DG) of BSF, Raman Srivastav is on a tour to south Orissa. On Sunday he visited Kalimela and Kudumulguma police stations in naxal-infested areas of the district. At present three battalions of BSF are deployed in Malkangiri and two are deployed in Koraput district of south Orissa.
